National Award for Mobility India for “Outstanding Work in the Creation of Barrier Free Environment for Persons with Disabilities’ by Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, Government of India.
Mobility India has been selected as a National awardee for ‘Outstanding Work in the Creation of Barrier Free Environment for Persons with Disabilities’ by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Department of Disability Affairs, Government of India, who has just announced the list for the National Award for the Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, 2014.
Mobility Indiais a registered society, established in August 1994, and has been a progressive force in bringing about a change in the disability, rehabilitation and development sector with a focus on empowerment, inclusion and participation of people with disabilities. MI aims to enhance the capacity and capabilities of the neglected population by comprehensive healthcare, education, livelihood, rehabilitation and social services.
Mobility India Rehabilitation Research and Training Centre is a three-storied structure in the heart of Bengaluru City. It is a model for Accessibility, Rehabilitation, Training and Service equivalent to International Standard. It includes facilities such as signage in braille, tactile flooring, customised furniture, auditory signal in the elevator and colour schemes that benefits people with disabilities. The building is completely accessible to people with different kind of disabilities, and reflects Mobility India’s vision that “people with disabilities are an integral part of society and entitled to have equal access to education, health, livelihood, and enjoy good quality of life”.
A visibly excited Ms Albina Shankar, Director, Mobility India, says, “It is a great accomplishment for us, and a recognition of our sincere work. The fact that it comes in our 20th anniversary year makes it all the more special.” AddsMs Shankar, “The 2014 theme for the International Day for Persons with Disabilities is, ‘Sustainable Development: The promise of technology’, and one of focus areas is on ‘Creating Enabling Work Environments’. Mobility India has strived towards this goal for many years now. This is an appropriate time for Mobility India to be recognised for its role in ‘Creation of a Barrier free Environment’. We will continue our work to promote inclusion and accessibility to help realise equal participation of persons with disabilities in society.”
The award has been conferred by His Excellency, President of India, Shri Pranab Mukherjee at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi on 3rd December, 2014, the International Day for Persons with Disabilities.
