    Mobility India to host workshop on ‘Wheelchair Service Training Package’ based on WHO guidelines

    Mobility India is conducting a five day training programme on ‘Wheelchair Service Training Package – Basic Level’ at its centre in JP Nagar, Bangalore, from September 16th to 20th, 2014. The programme is being conducted in association with USAID, World Vision, and Advanced Partners and Communities.

    Healthcare and rehabilitation professionals from across the country such as Ganga Medical Centre and Hospital, Tamil Nadu, Kiran Centre, Varanasi, Motivation India, Kanpur, International Committee of the Red Cross J& K will be among the participants. It is the first of the series of training packages, to develop the minimum skills and knowledge required by personnel involved in wheelchair service delivery.

    The training programme is based on ‘WHO guidelines on the Provision of Manual Wheelchairs in Less Resourced Settings’. The workshop aims to enhance wheelchair service provision in the country. A team of highly qualified physiotherapists, and prosthetics and orthotists from Mobility India will be conducting the programme focussing on building the skills and competency in basic level wheelchair service delivery. Participants will be given hands on training with wheelchairs at the workshop.

    Key take away from the training will include:

    • Core knowledge required for wheelchair service delivery;
    • An overview to key steps of wheelchair service delivery described in the WHO guidelines on the provision of manual wheelchairs in less resourced settings;
    • Working with wheelchair users to assess their mobility needs and identify the best possible mobility solutions;
    • Providing an appropriate wheelchair with an appropriate cushion;
    • Problem solving to find simple modifications to the wheelchair that can help ensure the best fit for the user;
    • Wheelchair repairs and maintenance;
    • Training of wheelchair users to make the best use of their wheelchair; and
    • Fabrication of a foam contoured cushion.

    Following the release in 2008 of the Guidelines on the provision of Manual Wheelchairs in less resourced settings, WHO, in partnership with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), has initiated the development of a Wheelchair Service Training Package. 

    The wheelchair is one of the most common assistive devices. The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) highlights the responsibility of states to ensure personal mobility and to promote the availability of and access to such devices. It is estimated that 70 million people require wheelchairs worldwide, yet only 5-15% of people have access. Wheelchair service provision is underdeveloped across the world.
