55th Annual Conference of Indian Association of Physiotherapy (IAP)

Ms Ritu Ghosh, Deputy Director-Training, Mr Sama Raju, Manager-Therapy Services & Partner Support and Mr Sudhakar G, Physiotherapist from MI participated in the 55th Annual Conference of IAP, organised at Ranchi.

The paper presentations from MI included ‘Assistive Technology for All including older people – WHO initiative of opening GATE’, ‘WHO – WHEELCHAIR SERVICE TRAINING PACKAGES (WSTP) in low and middle income Asian pacific countries’ and ‘Development Of A Low Cost Innovative Twin Device For Sitting and Standing, From Ideation To Impact For Children With Developmental Disorders’. Mr Sama Raju was presented with the most prestigious award ‘Significant Contribution Award-2017’ at the conference in recognition of his dedicated service.

Provision of Assistive Devices

The program of providing assistive devices by Shri Siddaramaiah, Chief Minister, Karnataka was conducted on 14th Jan, 2017. The event was organized by Department of Health and Family Welfare and Department for Empowerment of Differently Abled and Senior Citizens at Banquet Hall, Vidhana Soudha. The program focused on enabling access to appropriate assistive devices for people and children with disabilities.

52 staff and students of MI participated in the program. A Twin Device and a Prostheses was provided to MI service users, according to their individual need.

The other dignitaries present on the day were Smt Umashree, Minister of Women and Child Development, Empowerment of Differently Abled and Senior Citizens, Shri K. R. Ramesh Kumar, Minister of Health and Family Welfare Department, Shri H.K.Patil, Minister of Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Development, Shri R.Roshan Baig Minister of Urban Development, Haj and Information, Shri Ramalinga Reddy, Minister of Transport Department, Dr. Sharanaprakash Rudrappa Patil, Minister Medical Education from Health and Family Welfare Department, Smt. G. Padmavathi, Mayor, BBMP and Shri Govindraj, Director of Differently Abled and Senior Citizens. 

Best Innovation Award

The 5th International Conference and Workshops of Physical Therapy was organised by Physiotherapy Unit, Department of Anaesthesiology, Pain Medicine & Critical Care at All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS), New Delhi from 8th-12th December, 2016.

Physiotherapy being the inseparable part of holistic management of a range of disorders, the latest trends, advancements and upcoming research in it has been of utmost significance to enhance the health & well-being of people.

Mr Riyaz Hussain, Assistant Manager, Physiotherapy on behalf of MI received the ‘Best Innovation Award’ at the conference for the unique design of low cost, pre-fabricated Twin Device. Twin Device is the outcome of continued research in the field of positional devices to address the issues of children with Cerebral Palsy and associated disorders. This device has been designed to improve sitting and standing posture of children according to their developmental need.

22nd Anniversary Celebrations

Mobility India (MI) celebrates its 22nd Anniversary- two decades and 2 years of offering services towards the inclusion and empowerment of people with disabilities. The celebratory events was presided by Ms Marika Millar from MIBLOU, Switzerland, one of the strong supporters of MI since its inception.

Followed by lamp lighting, Ms Albina Shankar, Director, MI welcomed all the staff and took the opportunity of the occasion to reflect on the 22 years of journey, developments undertaken, milestones achieved and also challenges faced and overcome. 

Ms Ritu Ghosh, Deputy Director-Training, MI addressed the audience on the purpose of the commencement of training programs at Mobility India and the achievements and recognitions received till date. She welcomed all the students enrolled for the 15th Batch of training in a range of courses; Rehabilitation Therapy Assistant, Lower Limb Orthotics & Lower Limb Prosthetics.

Ms Marika Millar conferred the Jo Millar Award for the year 2016 to Ms Susila for her outstanding performance and overcoming multiple barriers. Ms Susila hails from Pavgada, a remote village form Andhra Pradesh. Having experience of Polio in her early childhood and the after-effects could not stop her from achieving what she ever yearned for. She was referred for the Rehabilitation Therapy Assistant (RTA) course at MI by Rural development Trust, one of the NGO working in disability sector in and around Andhra Pradesh. According to the trainers’ as well as service staff feedback, Ms Susila has been studious and dedicated towards rendering services to the clients in all aspects.

As a part of the celebrations, indoor and outdoor games were organised and the winners were presented with tokens of appreciation. Staffs and students shedding their inhibitions exhibited cultural performances, making the evening most enjoyable for the audience. The key highlights of the cultural performance was the presentation of the cultural, linguistic diversity of students across the various training courses of MI.
