The Northeast region of India is home to 44 million persons who live in eight states – Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, and Tripura. It is an area of enormous ethnic, cultural, religious, and linguistic diversity. Geographically, the region is dominated by dense forests, rivers, lakes, and mountains. Assam is the biggest state occupying more than 70 percent of the total population of the region. Significant challenges affect the disability and rehabilitation services in the Northeast.
Mobility India’s north-eastern office was established in Assam in 2015 to address the situation of persons with disabilities and rehabilitation services in the region.
The community-based inclusive development programs have been implemented in eighty-five villages across seven Gram Panchayats in the Dimoria Block of Kamrup District, Assam, the focus areas were to combat poverty through disability inclusion and promote sustainable development by fostering inclusive communities.
Provision of Rehabilitation and Assistive Technology services along with therapeutical interventions. Since 2015, the centre has catered to 2000+ persons and children with disabilities, from 18 districts which promoted inclusion of children in schools, social inclusion, participation and bringing quality changes in their lives.
Livelihood: Promoted rural entrepreneurship, identified individuals within the community having skills in bamboo and handloom weaving, as well as livestock rearing. Skill trainings were imparted, along with initial stock support, which enabled persons with disabilities, their families to become entrepreneurs. Opportunities such as water hyacinth crafting, bamboo crafts, piggery, poultry farming, and backyard kitchen gardens have been provided.
