MI, in a synergetic partnership with grassroot organizations, focusses on early interventions in cases of disability and the timely rehabilitation of the physically challenged in rural India. As part of this mission, MI provides technical support in the creation and strengthening of rehabilitation services as also in reaching out to people in need of prosthetic, orthotic and therapy services.
The key areas of support include:
- Setting up of prosthetic, orthotic & therapy facilities and associated repair & maintenance workshops;
- Providing direct and mobile workshop services; and
- Commissioning of mobile workshops.
This unique approach has been conceptualized with a view to helping communities become self-reliant in the rehabilitation of the disabled and improving the quality of the life of people with disabilities in the rural areas.
Currently, MI has partnership arrangements with 17 grassroot organizations spread over four southern and three north-eastern states. In addition, MI has established close linkages with several others through its CBR projects.
MI is the facilitating agency for ABILIS , a Finnish Foundation that seeks to help grassroots organisations in the empowerment of people with disabilities, for its projects in India’s southern & north-eastern states. In this capacity, MI organizes workshops for familiarising the development/ disability organisations with the process of ABILIS funding and carries out pre-funding & mid-term evaluations. Currently, 45 such projects are in progress in six states.
